§ 6-1. Cats roaming at large.

  • (a)

    Declaration of nuisance; impoundment; redemption fee. Any cat that habitually roams at large on property belonging to one other than the cat owner, is hereby declared to be a nuisance and law enforcement officials are hereby empowered to impound such animal. The impounding officer is to hold the cat for a minimum period of three (3) days during which time the owner or keeper of such animal may claim the same by payment of an impounding fee of five dollars ($5.00), plus one dollar ($1.00) for each day of impoundment.

    (b)

    Adoption by nonowner; destruction and disposal. If the animal is not claimed in accordance with paragraph (a) above, the cat may be adopted by a willing individual(s); or the impounding officer, or other officer or person appointed by him, may destroy the animal in a humane manner and cause the body thereof to be disposed of as provided by law for the disposal of bodies of other dead animals.
